Daniel’s End-Time Prophecies and Israel

MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN. Peres, your kingdom is divided and given to the Medes and Persians.
Daniel 5:25 and 28

The ebb and flow of international politics and the religious versus the secular conflict in Israel should not cause us to lose sight of the eternal truths contained within the Tanakh.

We must pray for Israel during this period of uncertainty. We should pray for the Government of Israel, and for all who are in anguish over the continuing land problem.

The prophet Daniel spoke HaShem’s word into the life and times of Israel in captivity, and to the kings of Babylon. For Belshazzar, the writing was literally on the wall and his life and his kingdom were taken from him as Daniel
said they would be. Daniel spoke not only to his own time and era, he spoke into the future, latter days.

Daniel had a great deal to say about the end times and his accuracy has already been proved in his fore view of the now historical events that followed him: He described the future rise of Medo-Persia, Greece and Rome as world powers, and he foretold the division of Alexander the Great’s empire into four kingdoms. He even described the infamous Antiochus Epiphanes who lived nearly four hundred years later.

The style and content of Daniel indicate 6th century BCE authorship, and it is worth noting that the Qumran communities which produced the Dead Sea Scrolls left eight complete copies of Daniel and many fragments. Two of these fragments are considered to be as old as the large Isaiah scroll which predates Antiochus Epiphanes by several centuries. Clearly the Qumran sect considered Daniel to be authentic, inspired, and important enough to warrant their attentions.

Daniel spoke of an endtime false messiah arising who would deceive many and bring great suffering to the Jews.

Let us look at some of Daniel’s prophecies:

5:28 Peres, your kingdom is divided and given to the Medes and Persians.
7:21 I watched and the horn made war with His holy ones.
7-25 And he shall speak words against the Most High … and he intends to change times and law.
8:11 Yes, he magnified himself even to the Ruler of the Host.
4:12b And it threw the truth down to the ground.
8:25 He shall cause deceit to succeed in his hand … he shall destroy many.
9:27 And upon a wing as abominations, a desolator, even until the end.
11.37 And he will show no regard for the G-d of his brothers.
11:39b And he will divide the land for a price.
12:1 There will be a time of distress such as has not been since there was a nation.

It is clear that truth shall be thrown to the ground and the false one shall utter words against the Most High. He shall change many things.

Consider, for instance, how far Israel has moved away from the vision David Ben-Gurion expressed when he said: "We face the difficulties ahead of us with confidence, for our trust is in the ROCK OF ISRAEL." Do any of Israel’s leaders today even acknowledge that there is a Rock of Israel? Some seem to be saying that Zionism is passe, but more worrying than that, they are saying that G-d is passe.

The beast will succeed through human skill and deception, he will bring a peace of sorts, but remember these words from Jeremiah 8:11, "They dress My people’s wounds without concern, "Peace! Peace!" they cry, yet there is no peace."

The deceiver may be a Jew, for why else would Daniel say he will show no regard for the G-d of his brothers? And he will divide up the Land, and after the peace shall come the desolation. Others see the false prophet being Jewish and the anti-Messiah/Christ being a Gentile to mimic the one new man principle of Ephesians chapter 2.

Clearly, Daniel was speaking of the demise of Belshazzar when he informed the king about the meaning of the words, Mene, Mene, Tekal, Upharsin upon the wall of the palace, but those words may well be speaking to us again today:

Peres is the singular of Pharsin and from the same root comes Paras (Persia), and the basic meaning of all three words is essentially divide or slice-up.

Is it not remarkable that Israel had a leader called Peres who was prepared to divide up the Land for a price?

Whilst peace is a noble goal for any politician or nation to pursue, this peace is evidently causing division within Israeli society.

What price peace with your neighbours if it causes the members of your own household to war with each other?

Could it be that it is precisely this peace that Daniel warns us about?

The Nation is divided but, "there is nothing new under the sun," for, as the Sage said long ago, "that which has been is that which shall be, and that which has been done is that which shall be done. ” (Ecclesiastes -1:9)

There are two nations still, there have been since ancient times: "Israel rebelled against the House of David to this day" and, "none but the tribe of Judah followed the House of David." ( 1 Kings 12:19-20)

The lost sheep of the House of Israel are still lost, and "the stone rejected by the builders has become the chief cornerstone.’ (Psalm. 118:22)

"They have led My people astray saying, "Peace" and there is no peace," and "behold I am against the shepherds and I will require My flock at their hand.’ (Ezekiel 13:10,34:9)

We encourage the reader again to pray for the Government of Israel at this difficult time in the nation’s history. Let me also say that it is foolishness and vanity to even speculate as to who the beast will turn out to be, we would be better advised to think on how we will recognise the Messiah when He comes:

Adon Olam has promised that if you search for Him with all your heart, He will be found by you. (Jeremiah 29:13,14). He also spoke through the prophet Daniel and decreed that the Messiah would be cut off and become an atonement or kaphar for iniquity – BEFORE the destruction of the Temple at Jerusalem. ( Daniel 9:24-26.)

Also, IT IS WRITTEN of the Messiah: "I will raise to David a Branch of righteousness; a King shall reign and prosper … In His days, Judah will be saved and Israel will dwell in safety; now this is His Name by which He shall be called: ADONAI TSIDKENU, The Lord our Righteousness." (Jeremiah 23:5-6)

Yes, "as for you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, too little to be among the clans of Judah; from you ONE will go forth for Me to be ruler in Israel. His goings forth are from long ago, from the days of eternity." (Micah 5:2)

Yes Israel shall yet cry out, “Baruch HaBa B’shem Adonai!” (Psalm 118:26)

The crown still belongs to the Branch of David and "on that day … they will look on Me whom they have pierced; and they will mourn for Him as one mourns for an only son … And one will say to Him, What are these wounds between your hands? Then He will say: Those with which I was wounded in the house of My friends." (Zechariah 12:10 and 13:6)

On that day; they shall understand these words: "For a child is born to us; a son is given to us; and the government shall be on His shoulders. He will be called Wonderful Counsellor (Pele Yo’etz), the Mighty G-d (El Gibbor), Everlasting Father (Avi-‘Ad), Prince of Peace (Sar Shalom). To the increase of His government and of peace there is no end, on the throne of David, and on His kingdom, to order it and to sustain it with justice and with righteousness from now and forever.
The zeal of Adonai Tzva’ot will accomplish this."
(Isaiah 9:6,7)

Ezekiel 33:7 states: "And you, son of man, I have appointed you a watchman to the house of Israel. And you shall hear from Me the word, and warn them from Me."

THE WRITING IS STILL ON THE WALL – will you not turn to Ha Shem and enquire of Him what it means.
