Psalm 1

(The Way of the Righteous and the End of the Ungodly)

Introduction:

This is the first of at least eight Psalms called didactic, which means to teach or instruct morally. In other words these are spiritual life application principles that are to be seen within the physical realm, this therefore being our walk before God. 

The other 7 then, for personal meditative study are Psalm 5, 7, 15, 50, 73, 94 and 101.

It is interesting to note that the first Psalm shows the Christian and the second Christ, in other words the Lord has seen fit to show us how to live our life before Him in Psalm 1 and then in Psalm 2 to give instruction to mankind to either accept or reject Him as Saviour and King. God the Father states that He has set His only Son before us as the Messiah (the anointed One) and that He will reign triumphantly over His enemies until they are made His footstool (c.f. 1 Corinthians 15:24-28). 

Proposition:

The second point is to see that this Psalm shows the righteous and the unrighteous, the saint and the sinner, giving a comparing and a comparison between the two in this life and the one to come! Psalm 2 shows the friends and foes of the Lamb, the Son of God whom we are either going to revere and fear or rebel and forsake! This then is the simple choice before all, to either repent and be pardoned or rebel and perish forever! Repentance is the life and death principle throughout the Holy Scriptures.

We are simply separated from God by our own ways, His are the standards and we all sin and fall short of these as Romans 3:23 states. Then in Romans 6:23 we are told the wages or end of sin is death, that which is common to all! But in Christ Jesus there is life after death, for He defeated sin, death, Satan and Hell in dying for our sins. He lived a perfect moral life before God and men, tasting death and yet not worthy of it. Our kinsman redeemer has experienced that which is common to all, death, and so in atoning for our sins on the Cross and rising from the grave He has given us a way back to God. God has the right to make the rules and we have no right to break them!

Body of Teaching:

Let us now look at the Godly Man and the Ungodly Man –

The Godly Man.

1. His Purity – ‘he walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly.’ Verse 1.

2. His Progress – seen in 3 negatives and 2 positives. Verses 1 and 2.

3. His Piety – ‘delights in and meditates on God’s Law.’ Verse 2.

4. His Position – ‘planted by the rivers of water.’ Verse 3.

5. His Prosperity – ‘whatever he does prospers.’ Verse 3.

The Ungodly.

When we contrast and then compare the above 5 points (the number of grace) with the condition and character of the ungodly (describe in the plural, not the singular tense) we can see that they are ‘like the chaff which the wind drives away’ – Verse 4, and then there are 3 negatives about their ways within Verses 4-5.

1. The ungodly are ‘not so’ in comparison to the godly man. Verse 4.

2. They are ‘not able to stand in the judgement’. Verse 5.

3.  ‘Nor shall sinners stand in the congregation of the righteous.’ Verse 5.

The number six is the number of man and so God’s judgement over all men is stated in Verse 6 –

‘The Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the ungodly shall perish.’

Further to this we can see that when people live in sin they go from bad to worse. At first they merely ‘walk’ in the counsel of the ungodly but as time goes on they become accustomed to sinning and the presence of evil is with them continually. To begin with their evil is practical rather than habitual but now they ‘stand’ in the ways of all sinners in open rebellion, wilfully violating God’s commandments. They will leaven or teach others their ways and that is why bad company corrupts good character. Finally, those who rebel will ‘sit’ in the seat of the scornful and so we see a progression of walking, standing and then sitting. Once we compromise and conform this leads to contamination and corruption, it is a slow process as the Devil and his demons weave their spell around the base nature of all mankind.

Truly, as 2 Corinthians 4:4 states. ‘Whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of  God, should shine on them.’

We can sum up by stating that the Law of the Lord is the true believer’s daily bread.

Those who love the Lord will come out to be separate from the life of unbelievers, for what fellowship can we have with them – 2 Corinthians 6:14 and 17.

We shall suffer reproach because we trust in the living God – 1 Timothy 4:10.

The allegorical picture of being a fruitful tree as stated in verse 3 shows 4 things:

a) Where it grows – we should especially note this as it speaks of believers fellowship.

b) How it came there – called and chosen.

c) What it yields – good fruit, being words and works. Shining and salt like to all.

Patience, zeal, and not withering are the ‘fruit in its season‘, year in and year out.

d) How to be like it – making disciples, passing on righteousness and sanctification.

It is to these teachings and more that we can all say a loud amen and glory to our God.
