PSALM 23 – The Shepherd Psalm.

1. RELATIONSHIP – ‘The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want.’ – verse 1.

2. REST – ‘He maketh me to lie down in green pastures,’ – verse 2.

3. REFRESHMENT – ‘He leadeth me beside the still waters.’ – verse 2.

4. RESTORATION – ‘He restoreth my soul.’ – verse 3.

5. COUNSEL – ‘He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness’ – verse 3.

6. COVENANT – ‘for His name’s sake.’ – verse 3.

7. COURAGE – ‘Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil.’ – verse 4

8. COMPANIONSHIP – ‘For Thou art with me’ – verse 4.

9. COMFORT – ‘Thy rod and Thy staff, they comfort me’ – verse 4.

10. PROMISE – ‘Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of my enemies’ – v 5.

11. POWER – ‘Thou anointest my head and with oil,’ – verse 5.

12. PROVISION – ‘My cup runneth over.’ – verse 5.

13. PROTECTION – ‘Goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life’ – v6.

14. PROSPERITY – ‘and I will dwell in the House of the Lord for ever.’ – verse 6.

a) The Lord in verses 1 to 3 – Shares His life with us.
Gives His life for us.
Puts His life in us.

b) In verses 4 to 5 we see - His companionship and protection.

c) In verse 6 we have - Eternal life with Him.

We can only marvel at the construction of God’s Word as He shows His 8 Covenant Names to us within this wonderful Psalm loved by millions.

1. The LORD is my shepherd;

Here is JEHOVAH-ROHI – The Lord is my Shepherd. Gen 48:15-16. John 10:11.

2. I shall not want.

Here is JEHOVAH-JIREH – The Lord will provide. Genesis 22:14 and
also JEHOVAH-EL-SHADDAI – The Lord is my supplier

3. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures;
He leadeth me beside the still waters.

Here is JEHOVAH-SHALOM – The Lord sends peace. Judges 6:24.

4. He restoreth my soul;
He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness
For His name’s sake.

Here is JEHOVAH-TSIDKENU – The Lord our righteousness. Jeremiah 23:6.

5. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil;
For Thou art with me;
Thy rod and Thy staff, they comfort me.

Here is JEHOVAH-SHAMMAH – The Lord is there, my abiding presence. Ezekiel 48:35.

6. You preparest a table before me in the presence of my enemies;
Thou anointest my head with oil;
My cup runneth over.

Here is JEHOVAH-M’KADESH – The Lord is my sanctifier. Exodus 31:13.

7. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
All the days of my life;
And I will dwell in the house of the LORD
Forever.

Here is JEHOVAH-NISSI – The Lord my banner. Exodus 17:15.
